Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery)

Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, is performed to realign the jaws when they do not meet correctly. It can dramatically improve your ability to chew, speak, and breathe—while also enhancing facial appearance and balance. This procedure is often recommended when orthodontics alone cannot correct jaw misalignment.

Conditions That May Require Corrective Jaw Surgery

  • Underbite or overbite

  • Open bite (space between upper and lower teeth when mouth is closed)

  • Jaw misalignment or asymmetry

  • Chronic jaw pain or TMJ issues

  • Difficulty chewing, biting, or swallowing

  • Obstructive sleep apnea

  • Facial imbalance or disproportion

What to Expect from the Process

  • Comprehensive Evaluation - We work closely with your orthodontist to assess your bite and jaw alignment using clinical exams, X-rays, 3D imaging, and models.

  • Pre-Surgical Orthodontics - Braces are worn before surgery to align the teeth in preparation for jaw repositioning.

What to Expect from the Process

  • Surgical Procedure - Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, in a hospital or surgical center. The bones of the upper jaw, lower jaw, or chin are repositioned and secured using small plates and screws.

  • Recovery & Post-Surgical Care - Initial healing takes a few weeks, but full recovery takes several months. Most patients return to school or work within 2–3 weeks. Continued orthodontic treatment may be needed to fine-tune your bite.

  • Greater facial symmetry and confidence

"Summit Oral Surgery made the appointment so comfortable"

"Intake Staff was friendly, fast and personable. Dr. Cameron Egbert made the appointment so comfortable, especially where I was anticipating my daughter’s anxiety, as well as very detailed in depth of procedure process yet simplified. He gave us referrals for the other two visits we will need through the process and that was a relieving factor not to need to figure out. Great office and we were so grateful that is how this journey started!"
