Identifying and Diagnosing Abnormal Tissue Changes

A biopsy performed at our office is a simple surgical procedure used to remove a small sample of tissue for examination under a microscope by an oral pathologist to help diagnose abnormal growths, lesions or unexplained changes in the mouth and jaw.

An oral biopsy may be recommended if you or your dentist notice:

  • A persistent sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal.

  • White or red patches in the mouth.

  • Unexplained swelling or lumps in the mouth.

  • Thickened or ulcerated tissue,

  • Numbness, pain, or changes in sensation.

  • Radiolucensies or radiopaques seen on dental x-rays.

Why a biopsy?

While not all lesions are serious, a biopsy is the most accurate way to determine whether a tissue change is benign, precancerous, or cancerous.

"Summit Oral Surgery made the appointment so comfortable"

"Intake Staff was friendly, fast and personable. Dr. Cameron Egbert made the appointment so comfortable, especially where I was anticipating my daughter’s anxiety, as well as very detailed in depth of procedure process yet simplified. He gave us referrals for the other two visits we will need through the process and that was a relieving factor not to need to figure out. Great office and we were so grateful that is how this journey started!"
